Professor Karsten Schmidt is President of the Bucerius Law School. He is also a member of the board of Hamburg's Zeit Foundation as well as Vice-President of the Übersee Club.

In 2006, Professor Schmidt was awarded the German Order of Merit First Class by the President of Germany.
